Dear members and friends
SA Private Equity industry now at R162bn
The past week has been a busy one with the launch of the SAVCA-KPMG Private Equity Industry Survey, with events held in Johannesburg and Cape Town. This year marks the fourteenth collaboration between SAVCA and KPMG on this survey, which is recognised as one of the most detailed of its kind globally. The quality of information in this report is thanks to SAVCA members’ dedication in completing the rigorous survey questionnaire.
The survey gives a comprehensive annual picture of development in the domestic private equity industry. The uptick in funds under management – growth of 17% to reach R162.2 billion in 2013 – reflects a growing investor appetite for private equity as an asset class.
SAVCA would like to thank AfrAsia Bank and GIBS for hosting the Johannesburg leg of the survey launch, on 3 June 2014. The robust discussion on African dealmaking gave an overall optimistic picture of opportunities on the continent – for those brave enough to seize them. Thanks in particular to Colin Coleman, the MD of Goldman Sachs Southern Africa, Nick Binedell, Founding Director of GIBS, Garth Towell, former MD of Kimberly Clark South Africa, Ryan Collier-Wood, Director and Head of Corporate Finance at AfrAsia and Mzi Mjekevu, Vice President of Barclays Corporate Development, for creating a scintillating conversation and keeping a large audience on the edges of their seats.
The Cape Town launch of the SAVCA-KPMG Private Equity Industry Survey was also well attended, with the guest list including friends from national and local government, longstanding SAVCA members, newcomers and prospective SAVCA members.
Hardcopies of the SAVCA Members’ Directory were distributed at both events. If you missed out, contact the SAVCA office about getting your own copy. Alternatively, visit your local Exclusive Books, CNA and Spar, where you’ll find the SAVCA Members’ Directory bagged with this month’s edition of Entrepreneur Magazine.
Members and non-members are reminded about the SAVCA-GIBS Three-Day Foundation Programme in Private Equity, which will run on 6-8 August 2014 at GIBS. This unique programme presents all the elements of private equity as practiced in Southern Africa, from the pre-investment and investment stage, to post-investment considerations and exits. Experienced private equity practitioners, advisors and institutional investors give their views, practical experiences, research outcomes and case studies. Registrations are coming in briskly and seats are limited, so we encourage you to secure your place soon.
Thank you to those members who keep us updated with their news, whether deal announcements, opinion pieces, staffing changes and media mentions. Keep checking the SAVCA website to find new research, industry updates, upcoming events and links to SAVCA members in the news.
